Unfortunately this day started with a call from the service we have for my mom that monitors her in case she has fallen. My brother got to the house first and when I arrived the ambulance and fire truck were out front. She was definitely hurt but coherent. She was taken to the hospital and, as we feared, they found she had a broken hip. The injury requiring a partial hip replacement and surgery would happen as soon as she was able. Due to her meds it was going to be a couple of days before the surgery could be scheduled. This created several concerns for all of us and for her. David, Amy and David´s youngest brother were all going on the trip to Europe in two days so this meant some decisions had to be made. We should note here that she told us we should go ahead with our plans.
Long story short: David and Amy decided to go on to our son´s house where we would be riding with the team to the airport and then flying to Prague. David´s younger brother would stay behind a couple of days and move his flight to Friday. David´s other brother was available to take care of the rest of the issues that would come up after everyone had left town. The main issue was where she would go for rehab after the surgery. By the time David´s youngest brother would fly out everything should be pretty well taken care of.
So to those who say we abandoned David´s mother when she was in pain and having to have surgery we say you have a good point. However, if you knew David´s family, this is what you would expect. A more detailed explanation is not constructive since every family is different and each will behave in ways that others may not understand or might find scandalous. In David´s family if you take things too personally you can´t survive.
The balance of the day that was not spent at the hospital was for hair appointments, cleaning up houses and preparing for the trip to Europe.
