July 3, 2025 Thursday

The 4th of July means many things to many people. For Amy it meant family for David it meant money. This year Amy´s side of the family had planned a get together so she drove to her sister´s house where her sister´s sons family also lives for the 4th of July weekend.

David did what he has done for many years now: sell fireworks. So Amy drives 4 hours west while David drives 1 hour west to do their things the next couple of days. David will drive the remainder of the way on July 5th.

At this point it should be explained that we each do various jobs for supplemental income. Our retirement funds are mediocre at best and by some standards a bit modest so we are compelled to find ways to replace the funds that fall victim to our propensity for indiscretionary spending. Over the past year David has driven a school bus route and Amy has done substitute teaching. These jobs provided us with between $1000 and $2500 during the months in which we worked. David also does some Ebay selling and Lyft driving when he has the inclination.

David drives over an hour to the Fireworks stand and tortures his feet for a couple of days for two reasons. One reason is the money of course. Its about 20 hours of work over a couple of days so it is a quick payday that helps our summer financial shortfall. But, the bigger reason is that he gets to work with some of the teachers and coaches and their families that he worked with while working in education. David is the oldest one working the stand and may consider retiring from this job in the next few years.

Amy had a good drive to her sister´s house and began enjoying family which is something that has always been important to her. So as we began to have conversations about our gypsy lifestyle we had to consider family and how we would keep family centered throughout our planning.

So day 3 ends as so many have lately: tired and having no problem sleeping.
